Even with Injuries, Pirates Go 3-1 on the Week

Pirate volleyball continues their preseason success this past week with four matches: COS loss (2-3), Cuesta win (3-0), De Anza win (3-0), and WH Coalinga win (3-1). Pirates improve to 7-2 overall.  
 
The 2023 volleyball crew features just two sophomores: Opp Tori Galloway (Modesto HS) and the lone returner from 2022, DS Isabel Nunez (Gregori HS). Galloway led the Pirates offensively with 54 kills, while Nunez led defensively tallying 66 digs. 
 
Several of the 13 freshmen on the crew have been putting up big numbers.  S Emerson Garcia (Merced HS) is running the offense and tallied 122 assists. MB Alize Martinez (Johansen HS) dominated at the net with 8 solo blocks and contributed 28 kills. OH Brooke Hayden (Enochs HS) had a standout performance in Friday's matches giving the Pirates 22 kills and 17 digs. DS Jenna Dalen (Sierra HS) earned the second most digs on the team with 38. MB Elaina Threet (Sierra HS) and OH Sierra Barrios (Ripon HS) were sidelined on Friday due to injuries. Threet and Barrios were a big part of the Pirates success on Wednesday, earning 13 and 17 kills respectively, and Threet adding 7 block assists. 
 
Pirates are on the road this week with Big 8 conference play beginning Friday.
