Pirates Snap 4 match Losing Streak

The Modesto JC Pirate volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak Wednesday night against the Cosumnes River Hawks. Both teams entered the match ranked in the "Best of the Rest" of the CCCWVCA State Rankings and 0-3 in Big 8 Conference play.

Pirates had a slow start in set one, which CRC took advantage. Both OH Rhiannon Genilla (Manteca HS) and MB Skyy Goudeau (Gregori HS) gave an impressive offense for the Pirates, 6 kills and 3 kills respectively. CRC took the first set 27-25.

Pirates bounced back hard in the second set with a balanced offensive front line and aggressive serving. Pirates jumped to an early 4-0 lead and would eventually lead the set 15-5. The Hawks put up a fight to bring the set back to 19-14. After 2 aces from L Teresa Benham (Sierra HS), the Pirates never looked back and would win set 2, 25-15.

The Hawks wouldn't back down as it was a back and forth battle in the third set. The Pirates went on to have their best attacking set this season, hitting .350 with 17 kills, 3 errors on 40 attempts. Genilla lead the way with 7 kills, hitting .545, as well as leading in digs for the set with 7. S Ambria Schneringer (Central Catholic HS) and MB Alyssa Stiles (Ceres HS) also gave impressive stats, each with 4 kills, no errors, hitting .571 and .667, respectively. Pirates would win, 26-24.

The fourth set was intense as the Pirates found themselves down 17-22. After a solo block from Schneringer, Stiles stepped back to the service line, serves up an ace, 19-22. Back-to- back block assists, Goudeau and Schneringer and Goudeau and OH Camryn Wong (Beyer HS), puts the score at 21-22. Hawks can't put over the next serve from Stiles, Pirates tie it up, 22-22. Next play, Genilla gets a perfect dig up to Schneringer who puts it away for the kill, score now 23-22, Pirates take the lead. Stiles lazers another serve, the Hawks freeball over, easily picked up by DS Brianna Quiroz (Central Valley HS), Schneringer feeds Goudeau in the middle for the kill, giving match point to the Pirates, 24-22. Stiles confidently steps back to the service line and gets her 7th ace of the night for match point, Pirates win set 4, 25-22.

The Pirates improve 1-3 in Big 8 Conference play, 6-6 overall.
