After being down 0-2, Pirates Fight Back to Defeat West Hills - Coalinga

Modesto JC Pirates second home match of the season was Wednesday versus the visiting West Hills – Coalinga Falcons. Freshman OH Vanessa Quevedo turned in a team best and career best 17 kills while sophomore libero Angel Nguyen patrolled the backrow with a season high 29 digs.  Sophomore Middle Blocker Sara Gonzalez also had a career best 7 aces for the match.

The Pirates struggled to get an offense going in the first two sets. The Falcons found their stride offensively hitting .129% and a strong .256% is sets 1 and 2, respectively. Pirates found themselves down 9-20 in set 1. Pirates went on an 11-3 score run behind freshman Quevedo. Quevedo hit an impressive .444 with 4 kills, 0 errors, on 9 swings. Gonzalez helped with 2 service aces. But the Falcons held out and took the set 25-20.

The Falcons had full control in set 2. With an early lead, the Pirates were never able to mount a come back and lost 17-25. Quevedo continued the strong attack with 4 kills, hitting .333%.

The Pirates found what they were missing in set 3. Pirates jumped to a 20-7 lead behind some tough serving, 7 team aces with 0 errors. Falcons made a push back going on a 7-0 run, but the Pirates prevailed and won the set 25-15.

The Pirates never slowed down for set 4. They had their best attacking percentage of the match, team high .296%. Sophomore OH Denae Finney made her presence known attacking from all areas of the court. Finney had 4 kills on 7 swings with 0 errors. Quevedo turned in a set best, 5 kills. But the run of the night came from Gonzalez from the serving line. Gonzalez went on a 6 and 4 point serving run, with 3 aces. The Falcons struggled to read her high, deep float serve. Pirates win the set, 25-14.

The Falcons did not give up and jumped to an early lead in the 5th set. At the switch, the Falcons were up 8-3. After the switch, the Pirates would eventually find themselves down 4-10. However, the Pirates, in thrilling fashion, took control of their game, and advantage of some Falcon errors, to post an 11-2 score run to win the set 15-12.
