Throwers Lead the Charge in Season Opener

The Pirate Throwers were poised to go from the practice ring to the competition ring in their first meet of the season. Led by Zaidy Arreola in the hammer and Katie Green in the discus the Lady Pirates showed they have what it takes to leave their mark in Northern California. Both Arreola and Green placed 2nd among all junior college competitors. Zaidy tossed the hammer 36.37 meters for a huge personal best and Green threw the discus 32.35 for a personal best as well. Arreola also had a personal best in the shot put (9.89 meters) for a strong showing in that as well. On the track, Candy Jauregui turned in the top performances for the Pirates. She placed first among all jc competitors in the 400 with a time of 1:03.67 and 2nd in the 200 with a time of 27.54. Alyssa Nunes also led all junior college participants in the pole vault with a vault of 2.75 meters. Nora Nash led the distance runners with a 1st place among junior college competitors in the 3000 with a time of 12:24.40 and 4th place in the 1500 in a time of 5:39.43. Jiselle Cornejo scored 2732 points in her first Heptathlon for another strong performance. The Pirates compete in the Jack Albiani Invitational at home on Friday. Events begin at 1:00 pm.
