Mayfield's 1:57.02 Leads Pirates in Season Opener in Fresno

Not at all intimidated by the idea of competing against University teams, the MJC Men's Track and Field Team showed that they are up for any and all challenges. Led by Mayfield's NorCal leading time in the 800 (1:57.02) and a 2nd place by Nicholas Valdes in his first decathlon (5079), MJC continued to impress throughout the day. Jovon Woods, a state qualifier in the long jump last year, was the top junior college performer in the long jump with a jump of 6.42 meters and decided to take up the javelin and placed 2nd place overall and first amongst all collegiate competitors with a throw of 38.88 meters. Macario Castro Zamora bested all junior college competitors in the shot put (12.36) to round out MJC's top performers. Other notable performances were turned in by KJ Moody who ran 50.15 in the 400 for 3rd place overall, Kyle Wesley who ran 11.07 in the 100 and 22.44 in the 200 to place 3rd in both. Lestat Bertolero ran a 2 second personal best in the 800 (2:02.76) to place 5th among junior college competitors. Next week the pirates are home on Friday for the Jack Albiani Invitational. Events begin at 1:00pm.
